Charles IV, Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor, has built Karlstejn castle to house the crown jewels. More importantly, it is a place of relaxation and meditation, so no women are permitted, and no politics are to be discussed. His young wife misses him, and hearing of the prohibition, resolves to sneak in for a night. At the same time, a country girl needs to prove she has spent one night at Karlstejn to get her potential fiance's father to agree to let her marry him. Both women dress up as pages. Things get complicated when a foreign dignitary comes to discuss politics, the queen is the page guarding Charles' bedroom, and the country girl is keeping watch on the walls of the castle.

Simply funny classic

This beautiful and light-hearted legend from 14th century is not based on truth, but - does it matter? As good king Charles IV. said in this movie: "Nobody will believe that in the age of the Father of this land was not allowed to women to come to Karlštejn castle." As usual in Czech movies, the actors are excellent (especially Brodský as Charles) Maybe you are used to see very wistful and serious historical films (like Polish people do), but Night on Karlštejn is a musical - and very good musical. So - why check it out? Sit down with your girlfriend or boyfriend, wife of husband and wait for the song of the queen (in English is the lyrics deeper romantic) and then... kiss your darling.
