Nonstop action in Sung Dynasty swashbuckler

DEADLY DUO (1971) is one of a group of historical near-epics from 1970-73 directed by Chang Cheh and starring Ti Lung and David Chiang. This one's considerably shorter than the others (THE HEROIC ONES, NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, BLOOD BROTHERS), with less in the way of characterization and plotting and more in the way of fighting, action and adventure. All the fights involve various weapons, mostly spears and swords, but also some pretty exotic ones, such as a pair of lethal cymbals and a container that shoots out incendiary balls. The co-director of the action scenes is Lau Kar Leung (aka Liu Chia Liang) who had a special interest in spear and stick fighting and went on to direct some of the best kung fu films of the late 1970s and early '80s.

The plot involves patriots during the Sung Dynasty and their attempts to rescue a kidnapped prince from Ching troops who have invaded the north of China. The patriots are led by Ti Lung who recruits a mysterious but seemingly superhuman fighter played by David Chiang to find a way to cross a perilous bridge to enter an impregnable fortress to locate and rescue the imprisoned prince. The big confrontation at the end involves trickery on the part of the heroes and the self-sacrifice of one of their number as David, who is not known to the enemy, brings in Ti as his `prisoner' to turn over to the Chings, as a way of gaining entrance. Then he cuts Ti's bonds and all hell breaks loose.

The fight scenes are generally pretty fanciful but always fun to watch. The patriots' opponents have names like Fire Man, Tree Man, Mole Man, Gold Mongol and Water Dragon. One particularly clever scene finds the patriots on log rafts crossing a river when Water Dragon and his cohorts attack and cut the binding on the logs, causing the rafts to fall apart in the water. There are several underwater action shots here.

David Chiang and Ti Lung are both extremely agile and energetic and carry the action forward with great verve. Some good villains are on hand as well, including such dependable players as Ku Feng, Chen Sing, Bolo Yeung (as Water Dragon) and Liu Chia Yung. It's not a terribly deep film, but it's colorful and exciting and plays like a pumped-up swashbuckler. Although kung fu purists may prefer Chang Cheh's later Shaolin series, fans of sword- and weapons-play will enjoy this.

A powerful film that resembles a Greek tragedy

I have seen almost all of Guney's films, and this is one of the best. Unfortunately, only two of them made it to VHS (Yol and The Wall), and none to DVD. They are important not only because of their quality as films, but also because they show us life in a country that few Westerners know anything about. Turkey is really two countries: one urbanized and industrialized, the other backward and agricultural. And both parts of the country have more than their share of conflicts, which Guney portrays with unrelenting realism. In "Baba" the father goes to jail for the crime of his landlord's son, and in return the landlord agrees to support his children. Then for much of the film, we see his life in prison - no torture or solitary confinement, just a walled-in community whose hierarchy reflects the world outside, and where the protagonist is called "Baba" (Father) in recognition of what he did. Then he is released and we learn the results of his sacrifice.

Far From Satisfactory On Any Level

The Groan Factor will be prominent in the minds and gullets of most viewers who endure sitting through this South African made affair, set in 1939 immediately prior to the onset of World War II, a story so silly that the apparently random actions of wild animals seen during travelogue sections seem rife with logic when compared with those of characters put in place by director/screenwriter Percival Rubens. An American couple, James Kingstreet (John Saxon) and his wife (Tippi Hedren) make their home and manage a wildlife preserve located between Italian-governed Abyssinia and British Kenya as war approaches, a sharp change for Kingstreet from his previous vocations of big game hunter and Spanish Civil War partisan (as seen by flashback) and each of the mentioned contending nations has deployed a small armed force to take possession of the preserve's water holes in order to assume an advantageous strategic position, in spite of the district's neutrality and importance to fauna and to a native village, overriding objections from the sanctuary's American overseer. Kingstreet's sole assistant is a native ( who continually addresses him as "bwana") and he has a prickly relationship with his one-eyed brother (Brian O'Shaughnessy) who lost his orb by a childhood accident at the hand of Jim, yet still locally hunts large game, but Kingstreet and his spouse will not accommodate either the English or Italians threatening their spread, thereby particularly antagonizing the commanding major of the latter group, played well by Rossano Brazzi, especially when the reformed hunter assaults the Fascisti with a homemade bomb dropped from his bi-plane, co-piloted by his wife. With neither his script nor direction does Rubens give apparent thought to such elements as avoidance of predictability, attention to details, and continuity, e.g., 1939 military personnel sporting long sideburns and hair, and even with meager forces opposing him, it is unreasonable to expect that the intrepid American might successfully oppose two armies and the film sags into foolishness, with the rushed ending manifest more of budgetary restraint than any presence of directorial design.

How the past and a not so innocent accident rushes back in the killing of seemingly unrelated people. Bravo Philippe Labro.

An exceptional movie construction, masterminding the script, the actors, the music and the location. Each scene, per day and murder, and each actor's performance leave vivid pictures in my mind: the plunge in the swimming-pool, the deceived look of Gravina in her love-sex affair with Trintignant, the full power run of Trintignant around the Nice harbor, the final death posture of the murderer. Jean-Louis Trintignant camps a local French Riviera inspector, very self-image oriented as are most of the featured residents of the Cote d'Azur. A series of murders with no evident link is followed by Trintignant, each one filling a piece of the puzzle and bringing him closer to the murderer. Labro, the film director, shoots real-street-life and picks up the best essence of each of his actors. Beyond Trintignant, each other actor seems to have the second role while playing their cast with their own personality. Labro could have been another Jean-Pierre Melville and his magnificent "Le Cercle Rouge". This "Sans Mobile Apparent" showed all the promising ingredients needed by the French cinema to find a respected place in action movies. Labro followed up with "l'Heritier", not bad, far not as good, the magic having disappeared. My biggest regret: "Sans Mobile Apparent" is as yet unavailable in DVD and does not play on TV anymore.

Brutal yet slow and melancholy gangster film

Unlike many other films by Hideo Gosha this one sort of operates as a reverse action film. The first ten minutes are the most exciting and visually active and the climax, despite the brutality on screen, is almost leisurely. Was that the intent? It's hard for me to say.

The film follows the lives of several gangsters after they have been suddenly pardoned by the new Japanese government in the late 1920's. Jailed after a fatal inter-gang fight the ex-cons attempt to return to their old gangs but find everything has changed. Things don't go easy and the inevitable final conflict is set in motion.

Dense with plot and gangster etiquette, this is not an easy film to jump into. Gosha's earlier samurai films are more accessible. The plot revolves around Tatsuya Nakadai's withdrawn and moody gangster but it takes detours with some of the other characters which can be confusing. The photography is dark and saturated with color. It's hard to see clearly what's happening at times but that seems to have been intentional. The fights are very realistic with nearly everyone killing each other with short knives. Not the clear stylized slashes of a samurai sword where the victim just falls over dead, these are brutal horrible deaths. The excellent music is very influenced by Morricone's western themes unfortunately including the incessant repetition of the same theme over and over (something that Morricone really didn't have control over). The pacing is slow, sometimes pretentious. At two hours it can be an effort.

I saw this in the late seventies at it's New York premier and just again recently. I feel the same way about it still. You may like it but be prepared for the slow pace after the quick start.

Sloppy but fun spaghetti western

By the 1970s, many spaghetti western filmmakers decided after years of making serious spaghetti westerns to start making some that were more comical in nature. "They Call Me Halleluja" (a.k.a. "Heads I Kill You, Tales You're Dead") is one such western, and overall it's a pretty fun exercise. It's goofy fun almost right from the start, with assorted slapstick and various other comic touches (a machine gun sewing machine.) The peppy score by Stelvio Cipriani is the icing on the cake. The movie is not perfect - there are a few moments when it seems that linking footage is missing, and in the second half of the movie, the characters seem to forget about the treasure they had previously been seeking. And the second half also starts to get a little tiresome with its seeming padding. But overall, if you like spaghetti westerns and you are not in a completely serious mood, this movie will do nicely.

The end of the film, with the destruction of a town is the reason to see this otherwise unremarkable film

Discharged soldiers, just back from Viet Nam, decide to drive across country and see the nation they protected. The country doesn't want to see them, and after being hustled by a hooker, their car breaks down in a small town that doesn't treat them well. Their revenge makes Rambo's look like gentile tea party.

One of the many angry vet goes nuts films that popped up through the 1970's. Despite the fact that 20th Century Fox released this this is pure drive-in fodder. The film isn't really that good, but is made watchable and memorable by the total destruction of the town. Personally everyone had it coming on all sides, except the audience who has to wait an hour through bad acting to get to the good stuff. Containing what is probably the single worst performance of Joe Don Baker (Mitchell) this is the sort of movie that makes you really wonder how he was ever considered a star and leads you to the inescapable conclusion that Baker is rightly the punchline of jokes. I say this as someone who likes him as an actor.

If you get to see this just watch the end, where the mismatched gun shots (how many different noises can a single machine gun make?) make this worth seeing.

TWAS A LONG TIME BETWEEN ITS COMPLETION AND ITS RELEASE....EVEN MORE WOULD HAVE BEEN USEFUL.

Dave Dearborn (Tom Keena) Vietnam veteran, free-lance journalist, and mercenary, is operating a discotheque aboard a ramshackle junk plying Singapore's harbor, when he receives an offer to investigate a probable defection of a scientist from Communist China. An overly complicated storyline depicts Dave taking the assignment because Chinese "businessman" Mr. Lim may have his claws into the defector in order to vend his expertise to the highest bidder, assisted by Lim's mistress Mai Lee (Vicki Racimo) for whom Dave carries a torch from their former affair. In the course of searching for the missing researcher, Dave becomes entangled with and beds several avidly willing females, while other bodies of the deceased sort pile up following a string of shootings, and we are given a surfeit of material detailing Dearborn's past as a cocaine addict, murderer for hire, and undercover homosexual! Filming is in Singapore, completed in 1971, but the piece was not released until Troma, a company specializing in exploitation features, offered it in 1984; there is, therefore, some interest within the production for its footage along the city's Orchid Road, Sago Lane and, in particular, Bugis Street with its swarms of transvestites, all given the kindness of being cleaned by the regime of Lee Yuan Lew subsequent to the movie's completion. Aside from this historic significance, little remains of value as the picture suffers from pronounced flaws in continuity and logic, in addition to generally shabby production values under the direction of schlockmeister Joel Reed, with a cast of largely, and thankfully, unknowns. Racimo is an able actress but here is wasted, as during one rather fantastic scene when, after her character dispatches her current squire by shooting him to death, including a close range finishing shot to the head, she then gives in to the demands of lust with Keena's character, the pair thrashing about amid four recently slain evildoers; there is precious little by way of interpretation that can be provided in such an instance.

Durango does the math

Durango (Brad Harris) works as a debt collector. Somebody didn't pay after he lost a game of poker? Call Durango, and he'll get you the money - minus the 10 percent he always keeps as his reward. One day, however, he retrieves 100,000 dollars from a stolen money transport, and the manager Ferguson (Gino Lavagetto) thinks 10 percent of 100,000 is far too much. He accuses Durango to have stolen the money from him, and with 10,000 dollars in his pockets, Durango finds it hard to convince the sheriff he's innocent. In prison, Durango meets the Mexican bandit El Tuerto (Jose Torres) who helps him to escape. While he hides at a beautiful blond lady (Gisela Hahn), Durango makes plans for his revenge on Ferguson, but El Tuerto meanwhile joins company with other bandits and makes his own plans...

Average 'western all'italiana' without major flaws, yet without something new, either. Jose Torres' maniacal performance is outstanding in a movie where everyone else seems a bit wooden. One scene when Durango hands El Tuerto, who is calling him names, over to the sheriff is definitely 'inspired' by 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.

Hammer Double Trouble.

In my opinion a Hammer Vampire Classic. It's early 70's, so Hammer Studios are mixing blood sucking with naked buxom wenches. Prior to this, punters had to be content with heaving bosoms, rather than the full monty.

This is the 3rd part of the Karnstein Trilogy, with Vampire Lovers and Lust For A Vampire being the other movies in the series. They are all a similar take on the same story - Vampire Lovers has a lesbian flavour, and Lust For A Vampire is set in a finishing school for girls. All have the Karnstein family as the predatory vampires in one form or another.

Twins Of Evil has Playmates Mary and Madeleine Collinson in the title roles, the twist being one is good and one evil. The evil one is drawn to the roguish Count on the hill, and falls prey to his blood-sucking tendencies. Meanwhile, Uncle Gustav (Peter Cushing) is hunting down suspected witches in a puritanical fervor, leading to him doubting the purity of his twin nieces. Satanic undertones and a love interest with handsome Anton Hoffer are thrown in to keep the movie rolling along.

Hammer Horror Films are always full of great sets, costumes and stirring music (usually re-used from the previous five movies) and this scores high on all three. The Collinson twins are better Playmates than actresses, but fill their parts and costumes magnificently. Peter Cushing had just lost his wife, and his acting has a harder edge to it than normal - perhaps due to this sad loss.

Anything from the 70's is going to look a bit dated now, but I think that Hammer got the Gothic feel and sex-horror mix about right with this fine outing. It's a Midnight Matinee vampire romp that should not disappoint.

Yellow Heaven

A great giallo from a director who made too-few forays into the genre but come up with the goods each time.

In particular, this (like "The Fifth Cord") is a great example of how the giallo creates a particular physical space in which the drama takes place - all ultra-modern and chic, with all sorts of psychosis rotting away under the slick surface.

Highlights include a great chase around and on the roof of a modernist office, Giancarlo Giannini's fine performance as a cop struggling with doubts about his abilities in a case that gets all too personal, a cameo by Walter Eugene from "The House With Laughing Windows", a high quota of gorgeous starlets and one of Morricone's best scores. And another guest-starring appearance by J&B scotch - surely worthy of a few PhD essays in it's own right for it's ubiquity in the genre (did the Italians drink an awful lot of this in the 60S and 70s or were they keen early adopters of product placement?)

Well worth a viewing for the general thriller fan and a must for any self-respecting giallo aficionado.

Familiar cast with no conviction

A familiar cast of western regulars make up the players in The Gatling Gun. Sad to say that a badly written and/or a badly edited story fill this plot with more holes than a Gatling Gun could give a wooden wall.

A couple of troopers plus Reverend John Carradine and his seductive stepchild Barbara Luna steal a Gatling Gun from the army to give to the Apaches. One of the troopers is killed, but the other, Robert Fuller, is captured along with Carradine and Luna and Captain Guy Stockwell is assigned to bring The Gatling Gun and his prisoners back.

But the Apache chief Carlos Rivas still wants that weapon and the rest of the film is concerned with his efforts to get it even though he doesn't know that it doesn't have a firing pin.

The players here speak their lines truly without conviction. They all know that when the film is done it will grace their Thanksgiving table that year.

Bachchan's only movie with yesteryear's actress Mala Sinha.

Bachchan's only movie with yesteryear's actress Mala Sinha. Mala Sinha is a poor girl. Her marriage with Bachchan breaks down when Bachchan's family objects to her being uneducated and poor. Later Bachchan's re-marries Aruna Irani.

Mala Sinha goes on to higher education and becomes a successful political/intellectual figure in town. As fate might have it, Bachchan's family(wife and two kids) is forced to take favors from Mala Sinha. She has her revenge and causes tension in the Bachchan marriage.

The scenes involving the trio of Bachchan-Mala Sinha-Aruna Irani are very gripping.

Great movie- a remake in the waiting...

I first saw this as a kid- and have longed to see it again/own it/etc. It is a 10+ as far as plot goes, and although the production is as bad as any B-horror movie you'll ever see it almost adds to the mood of the film. Great action w/cool music, costumes, etc. And a twist of an ending rarely matched in modern screen-writing. A must-see for every movie fan.

At Altra Motors, Mr. Hulot designs an ingenious camper car with lots of clever features. A lorry hauls the prototype to an important auto show in Amsterdam, with Mr. Hulot alongside in his car and a spoiled, trendy PR exec, the young Maria, in her sports car packed with designer clothes and her fluffy dog. The lorry has every imaginable problem, delaying its arrival. A flat tire, no gas, an accident, a run-in with police, a stop at a garage, and numerous traffic jams showcase vignettes of people and their cars. Through interactions with these down-to-earth folks, Maria gradually loses her imperious conceit, becoming much more relaxed and fetching.

One of the great comedies!

Unlike the previous reviewer, I have to say that the French made many great comedies. But just as there are many styles in US cinema, so are there many styles in other countries.

"Trafic" is a wonderful stab at modern life and our infatuation with cars that is more up to date than ever, with traffic jams at an all time high.

In passing, or rather sitting, through the summery vacation road chaos this Tati movie slaps everything from drivers' behaviors and quirks that are border less, to general human characteristics, and even matters of national pride.

I disagree with the inability of the French to laugh at themselves - but one needs to realize that the humor involved is very deep and tongue in cheek, but is just about even more stinging because it is not so superficial.

What makes this movie, just like the other Tati movies so remarkable, is that one does not need to speak or understand French and can still watch it in its original sound track, because the camera does all the work. "Shtick" with brains, a piece of visual art that might hang in a modern art gallery, were it not a movie, self contained, intelligent, funny. It is a neat feature about most Tati films.

I remember being in stitches when I last saw it, and that was after seeing it several times already.

Other great French comedies would be the original versions of

"The Tall Blonde With The Red (Black) Shoe", ie "Le Grand blond avec une chaussure noire"

(note that the original odd shoe was black, not red),

"Birdcage", ie "La Cage Aux Folles", the German title of which was much closer to the actual "A Cage Of Fools" .... oh heck, just look up movies with Pierre Richard, Jean Rochefort, the unknown to Americans (because he would have put Hollywwod to such shame to kill their business in comedy) all time unforgettable Louis De Funes, Fernandel, Mireille Darc, Yves Montand, Jean Paul Belmondo (one of his movies is an obvious blueprint for Indiana Jones), .... these are all true actors that are also capable of character studies and can deliver such a punch that it flies right over many people's heads .... maybe the previous reviewer is right ... the French have no comedy ... not of the shallow sitcom style in any case. If you can laugh with your whole heart, head , and soul though, then start digging and you will find much of the best ever made.
