A funny film, one of the best musicals i have seen. Wesenlund acts very good like he always does. Even dough it is quite long I were entertained the hole time. one of the best films that has been made in Norway, and also one of the funniest. Not as funny as Fleksnes, but what is. Highly recommended.

Want a prime example of a "B" movie? This is it!

Can you believe that a deadbeat company called Bingo marketed this rare blaxploiter as an "action" film, and gave a dreadful sounding re-title called BLACK GAUNTLET? Wherever you can find it, don't set your expectations too high. It isn't a movie about damsels in distress, it's about a lady who struggles hard and helpless up the ladder to press garments and become a Hollywood success story in making filthy films. Our "starlet" knocks the movie producer dead by reciting a seductive line from the script, and upsettingly ditches him for good. This wouldn't be such a drag if this weren't about a chick taking her clothes off down to the undies, or a bunch of topless gals who would love to see you stare. I can stand the lady wanting to be a serious movie star, but enough sex and nudity steals the show. Rare movies are worth a look, but only if you can withstand the faulty packaging companies make to lure customers into their trap full of false promises. Noteworthy in a list of "where are they now?" directors is Chris Munger, known for the creepy-crawly classic chiller KISS OF THE TARANTULA.

An original and intriguing slice of period horror!

Avoiding death and what happens when we die have been recurring themes throughout all art forms since the dawning of time. Despite the fact that there are a lot of films that handle similar themes, The Asphyx stands out for it's original and intriguing exaction. The film hasn't gained itself the best reputation in the three decades since its release, and it was apparently ignored upon its introduction to the general public. This isn't surprising - The Asphyx takes elements from supernatural horror and there's a little bit of sci-fi involved, but selling this film couldn't have been easy as there's no way to pigeon hole it. The plot focuses on Hugo Cunningham - a man who discovers that when we die, what's called an 'Asphyx' appears. After conducting a few experiments, Hugo presupposes that if one were to capture this Asphyx, then that person would never be able to die. He then proceeds to test the procedure on himself, and after becoming immortal decides he wants his young assistant and daughter; who want to get married, to become immortal also…

The Asphyx is a British film set in Victorian times, and director Peter Newbrook does an excellent job of producing the period setting. The film was obviously made on a budget, and as such it doesn't exactly compete with some of the bigger budget films set around the same time; but still the director gets the point across. The special effects are a little hokey, but they work really well. The main standout where the effects are concerned are with the 'Asphyx' itself, and personally I'd much rather the effects shown here than the CGI rubbish we have nowadays. The acting is decent, with Robert Stephens being the main standout in the lead role, and receiving good support from Robert Powell. Jane Lapotaire is something of a weak link in my opinion as she's a little flat, but it's not too important. The film has a great premise, but in order for a premise to work, it needs a good plot too and this film certainly has that. The film is not predictable for most of its duration, and the drama between the central characters is always interesting enough to hold the audience's attention. The ending is both haunting and memorable, and overall; it has to be said that The Asphyx is a film that deserves more wide recognition!

Oh. My. God. Does this movie stink or what?

Claude Akins is a drunken, hurtful, abusive lumberjack who leads a pathetic, migratory life and socializes exclusively with miserable losers like himself. He's the hero (?) of this movie, which has the look of an el cheapo made-for-TV quickie. Hoyt Curtain, who did the music for dozens of Hanna Barbera cartoons, supplies the totally inappropriate background score. The cast includes such luminaries as Tab Hunter and Rosie Grier, but it's mostly about Claude Akins drinking, cutting down trees, getting into fights, and just generally being a disgusting slob. You'll cherish the scene in which Claude tells a hippie to get a haircut. No, really, you *will* cherish it.

It's My Favorite Werewolf Movie

What can I say. "The Boy Who Cried Werewolf" features a largely unknown cast (which might explain why the acting in this movie is so weak) in a rather cheesy movie that doesn't really seem to know whether it wants to be a comedy or a real horror movie - and yet I have to admit that this is probably my favorite werewolf movie of all time. I stumbled upon it many years ago when I was a kid and loved it then. Now, on the rare occasions when it pops up on TV (usually very late at night) I always watch it. Most recently it was on a Canadian cable station and I stayed up until after 2 in the morning to watch it.

It really is a rather intriguing story. A boy (Scott Sealey) and his father (Kerwin Matthews) are taking a night time walk through the woods while visiting their cabin when they're suddenly attacked by a werewolf. The father fights the beast off but gets bitten, and - well, you know what happens. The kid starts seeing this werewolf all around the area of the cabin, runs to tell his dad but can never find him. He finally puts it all together and tries to tell everyone and anyone (the local sheriff, his mother) that his dad's a werewolf. They all pat him on the head and say "right, kid." In the midst of the movie there's inexplicably a hippy commune of Jesus freaks who seem to have little purpose except to provide some comic relief.

I liked this movie. It gets lousy reviews, but something about it appeals to me. To each his own, I guess. To me, this gets an 8/10!

Nonstop action in Sung Dynasty swashbuckler

DEADLY DUO (1971) is one of a group of historical near-epics from 1970-73 directed by Chang Cheh and starring Ti Lung and David Chiang. This one's considerably shorter than the others (THE HEROIC ONES, NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, BLOOD BROTHERS), with less in the way of characterization and plotting and more in the way of fighting, action and adventure. All the fights involve various weapons, mostly spears and swords, but also some pretty exotic ones, such as a pair of lethal cymbals and a container that shoots out incendiary balls. The co-director of the action scenes is Lau Kar Leung (aka Liu Chia Liang) who had a special interest in spear and stick fighting and went on to direct some of the best kung fu films of the late 1970s and early '80s.

The plot involves patriots during the Sung Dynasty and their attempts to rescue a kidnapped prince from Ching troops who have invaded the north of China. The patriots are led by Ti Lung who recruits a mysterious but seemingly superhuman fighter played by David Chiang to find a way to cross a perilous bridge to enter an impregnable fortress to locate and rescue the imprisoned prince. The big confrontation at the end involves trickery on the part of the heroes and the self-sacrifice of one of their number as David, who is not known to the enemy, brings in Ti as his `prisoner' to turn over to the Chings, as a way of gaining entrance. Then he cuts Ti's bonds and all hell breaks loose.

The fight scenes are generally pretty fanciful but always fun to watch. The patriots' opponents have names like Fire Man, Tree Man, Mole Man, Gold Mongol and Water Dragon. One particularly clever scene finds the patriots on log rafts crossing a river when Water Dragon and his cohorts attack and cut the binding on the logs, causing the rafts to fall apart in the water. There are several underwater action shots here.

David Chiang and Ti Lung are both extremely agile and energetic and carry the action forward with great verve. Some good villains are on hand as well, including such dependable players as Ku Feng, Chen Sing, Bolo Yeung (as Water Dragon) and Liu Chia Yung. It's not a terribly deep film, but it's colorful and exciting and plays like a pumped-up swashbuckler. Although kung fu purists may prefer Chang Cheh's later Shaolin series, fans of sword- and weapons-play will enjoy this.
