An obscure , unpleasant and disagreeable thriller dealing with a relentless getaway

A pair of thieves called Mosquito (Franco Nero) and Memphis (an extreme Tour-De-Force by Telly Savalas) pull off a heist into a jewelry but it goes wrong . Both of them along with their accomplice called Maria (Ely Galleani) escape and take a car where is hidden a little boy (Mark Lester , also producer) . They are pursued and attempt to cross the border into France . Memphis thinks his colleagues may have double-crossed him , so he goes on the lam with the boy in tow and he carries out a criminal spree .

This is a thrilling tale with a twisted screenplay by D'Amico and Wells based on a story by Rafael Sanchez Campoy ; it contains psychological characterization , grisly killings , tense situations , excitement , though resulting to be a mediocre flick dealing with a failed theft and the thieves take it on the lam after the heist goes awry . This thriller has some delirious components, most notably the interpretation and the quirky roles , but is low on real emotions and high on scenery chewing and strangeness . It's atmospheric and slickly developed ; however extremely nasty characters and dark disturbing scenes create an inappropriate film . There are moments worth highlighting though like the violent theft and escape , a great sequence where Memphis terrorises a family of German tourists with unexpected and tragic results . This is an offbeat as well as far-fetched picture realized in unlikely style portraying lurid events . Telly Savalas steals the show as a wacko with ominous purports , though sometimes hands the role overblown and overacting way , as filmmaker Silvio Narizzano proved unable to control him . Average cinematography by Giorgio Tonti , being necessary a right remastering because of the copy of the film is washed-out . Atmosheric musical score by Maurizio Catalano and John Cavacas .

The motion picture was middlingly produced and directed by Canadian-born director Silvio Narizzano . He gained high reputation for his shooting of human dramas , as from the mid-1950's, worked in British television in a variety of genres ranging from thrillers and horror to serious dramatic works . Silvio subsequently filmed a Hammer film titled ¨Fanatic¨ with Tallulah Bankhead and his best picture was ¨Georgy Girl¨ with Lynn Redgrave . He also had successes with ¨Why shoot the teacher ?¨ and ¨The class of Miss MacMichael¨ ; however failed directing a Western titled ¨Blue¨ with Terence Stamp . The rest of career has been uneven to say the least and it often seems that he has followed over-heating his movies to fever level such as ¨Rednecks¨ also titled ¨Senza Ragione¨.

An overlooked gem of 70's Sci-fi. Uses its desert location to generate an atmosphere of isolation and paranoia. Fabulous photography of real ants add to the chilling atmosphere. Ending was a bit of a cop out but i'd still recommend this to any sci-fi fan

A bizarre combination of social realism and psychological thriller

Straight on Till Morning is certainly one of the most atypical films that Hammer Studios ever produced. It begins like a social realist kitchen-sink drama, replete with fragmented snapshot montage editing similar to Ken Loach's Up the Junction – incidentally, a film remade by Peter Collinson the director of this film. And for the first third of the film it seems like this is going to be another such gritty drama, however, it takes an unexpected detour when it suddenly turns into a psychological thriller. It's an extremely unusual combination that isn't entirely successful but definitely interesting. In actual fact it's one of Hammer's more intriguing efforts in my opinion because it's so weird.

The story is about a naive young girl called Brenda who moves to London to try and find a man. She winds up staying with a very strange foppish man called Peter who is in fact a serial killer of women.

The social realism and montage heavy editing is entirely at odds to anything else Hammer ever put out. This is a film that has way more in common with the British New Wave than it does with anything previously produced by the famous studio. None of the characters are particularly likable, with the men in particular very creepy and/or deeply unpleasant people with appalling haircuts. The central relationship between Brenda and Peter is, to put it mildly, bizarre. It's difficult to see what either of them sees in each other; while Peter's strange issues with beauty are a little hard to fathom. Nevertheless, I thought this one was not bad at all. It wasn't predictable in the way that most Hammer films tend to be. It was pretty bleak and overall a commendably uncommercial offering. Definitely worth a look if you like downbeat psychological dramas.

At Altra Motors, Mr. Hulot designs an ingenious camper car with lots of clever features. A lorry hauls the prototype to an important auto show in Amsterdam, with Mr. Hulot alongside in his car and a spoiled, trendy PR exec, the young Maria, in her sports car packed with designer clothes and her fluffy dog. The lorry has every imaginable problem, delaying its arrival. A flat tire, no gas, an accident, a run-in with police, a stop at a garage, and numerous traffic jams showcase vignettes of people and their cars. Through interactions with these down-to-earth folks, Maria gradually loses her imperious conceit, becoming much more relaxed and fetching.

One of the great comedies!

Unlike the previous reviewer, I have to say that the French made many great comedies. But just as there are many styles in US cinema, so are there many styles in other countries.

"Trafic" is a wonderful stab at modern life and our infatuation with cars that is more up to date than ever, with traffic jams at an all time high.

In passing, or rather sitting, through the summery vacation road chaos this Tati movie slaps everything from drivers' behaviors and quirks that are border less, to general human characteristics, and even matters of national pride.

I disagree with the inability of the French to laugh at themselves - but one needs to realize that the humor involved is very deep and tongue in cheek, but is just about even more stinging because it is not so superficial.

What makes this movie, just like the other Tati movies so remarkable, is that one does not need to speak or understand French and can still watch it in its original sound track, because the camera does all the work. "Shtick" with brains, a piece of visual art that might hang in a modern art gallery, were it not a movie, self contained, intelligent, funny. It is a neat feature about most Tati films.

I remember being in stitches when I last saw it, and that was after seeing it several times already.

Other great French comedies would be the original versions of

"The Tall Blonde With The Red (Black) Shoe", ie "Le Grand blond avec une chaussure noire"

(note that the original odd shoe was black, not red),

"Birdcage", ie "La Cage Aux Folles", the German title of which was much closer to the actual "A Cage Of Fools" .... oh heck, just look up movies with Pierre Richard, Jean Rochefort, the unknown to Americans (because he would have put Hollywwod to such shame to kill their business in comedy) all time unforgettable Louis De Funes, Fernandel, Mireille Darc, Yves Montand, Jean Paul Belmondo (one of his movies is an obvious blueprint for Indiana Jones), .... these are all true actors that are also capable of character studies and can deliver such a punch that it flies right over many people's heads .... maybe the previous reviewer is right ... the French have no comedy ... not of the shallow sitcom style in any case. If you can laugh with your whole heart, head , and soul though, then start digging and you will find much of the best ever made.

SLAP THE MONSTER ON PAGE ONE (Marco Bellocchio, 1972) ***

Considering the sheer amount of (vaguely boring) movies flaunting their individual creator's extreme left-wing politics to emerge from Europe throughout the 1960s and 1970s, it is hard in hindsight to believe just how many talented film-makers were 'duped' into upholding such naïve ideals; that said, the other side of the coin – basically equating Fascism – was even less comforting and that more dangerous…but it does make for rather intriguing (and ultimately more rewarding) cinema! Bellocchio's film, then, was one of a handful of titles to look at this alternative 'option': perhaps the most famous such example was Elio Petri's Oscar-winning INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION (1970), which shares with the picture under review its leading man – Gian Maria Volonte'; like that one and Dino Risi's similarly excellent IN NOME DEL POPOLO ITALIANO (1971), the film takes the form of a thriller – both this and the latter, in fact, involve the investigation into the rape and murder of a teenager emanating from high society: here, a radical is accused of the crime – and hounded by Volonte''s opportunistic newspaper for it – but the guilty party turns out to be somebody else, ferreted by a reporter not taken in by his superior's wiles, who is pursued in turn (and even blackmailed!) by the unscrupulous editor. The movie paints a most cynical image of the press, beginning with Volonte' 'embellishing' – and directing his underlings to shoot – a fire that broke out at the office during a riot (he is seen making intermittent contact throughout with the politically-affiliated young owner of the paper, played by "Euro-Cult" stalwart John Steiner); later on, while viewing the TV broadcast of a talk-show he was involved in, the man even takes it upon his wife – for her passivity and intellectual limitations!; however, the worst victim of his dishonesty is the uncouth schoolteacher (Laura Betti) he befriended in order to exploit for her affair with the murder suspect – one of the film's best sequences is the one where she is made to confront her lover's fellow activists in the police station. The film features a good Morricone-esquire score by Nicola Piovani and ends on a shot depicting the rampant pollution at the city limits – a metaphor for the so-called "yellow press" and remarkably similar to the finale of yet another newspaper movie, the classic FIVE STAR FINAL (1931).

Entertaining spaghetti-WWII

"Valter Brani Sarajevo" is a movie deeply ingrained in essence of practically everybody born in former Yugoslavia. There probably isn't a person here than hasn't seen it at least once. Its popularity and fond memories of it span over four decades now and none of the similar genre movies made before or since ever came close, not even Bulajic's war epics.

The phenomenon of it is really simple - it was the first action flick set in the WWII period. Before that one could only see deeply indoctrinated (and indoctrinating) movies about "just communist struggle against Nazi/bourgeois oppressors". This was the first time audience was actually able to just root for the good guys while not simultaneously being hammered by deep messages and propaganda. And the production crew did go to great lengths to make it happen.

There really is not much propaganda, if any, to be seen. There is hardly a mention of who the good guys belong to. There are no speeches of Tito, struggle, communism or proletariat. Germans are still bad, but you'd expect that in any war movie done by non-Germans.

There are however a lot of clichés and silly plots and sub-plots, clumsy extras and stunt men, the stuff you'd certainly expect in an action flick. There is also the most important ingredient - action. It's spectacular and there is lots of it. Silly script surprisingly doesn't detract from viewing pleasure and well paced directing really keeps it together.

"Valter" stands the test of time just as well as its American spaghetti- peers "Dirty Dozen" or "Kelly's Heroes". Nowadays we are all a bit smarter and nobody is required to watch it with naive reverence. There is a lot of unintentionally funny stuff in there, such as various goofs regarding anachronism, laughable German strategy as depicted, or the spy plot in which every principal character easily fools the other side by wearing stolen uniforms and having an impeccable accent when talking to his enemy. Still, even with all that, its easy to put disbelief on hold and follow the movie in what it is dead serious about

• being spectacular and fun.

Spectacle and fun is what "Valter Brani Sarajevo" achieves and it not only makes for two hours well spent - it makes you wanna spend them again and again.

OKLAHOMA CRUDE (Stanley Kramer, 1973) ***

Arguably the best latter-day Stanley Kramer film (i.e. made during his lean 1969-79 period); being a light-hearted romp with a mean streak, it might also be his oddest. It features an eclectic cast, with both George C. Scott (as a drifter) and John Mills (as Faye Dunaway's estranged father) shining in their comical roles; Dunaway herself (in an unflattering black wig) and Jack Palance (as a menacing thug, what else?) are also well-cast. Henry Mancini's flavorful score (and song) adds to the film's eccentricity, given its proliferation of foul language and occasional bouts of violence. In essence, patchy but generally enjoyable - and occasionally uproarious (Scott's priceless reaction to Dunaway's Third Sex speech and the second Scott-Palance confrontation). I had this on a VHS of wretched quality for years (though the quality of Robert Surtees' cinematography is still evident), but only watched it now to commemorate Palance's passing.

More nonsense from Derek Ford

Being kind of weird guy, I don't really watch sex comedies for the sex, so of course I'm a big fan of 70's British sex comedies where you don't have to worry too much about any hot sex scenes getting in the way of the preposterous stories or the "comedy" (which is often pretty entertaining, but rarely for the reasons originally intended).This is a portmanteau sex comedy like "The Wife Swappers" or "Sex and the Other Woman". The subject here is the "battle between the sexes". In the first story an unfaithful husband and wife both take their respective lovers to the same hotel. In the second story a plumber does some work at the swank apartment of a French glamor actress and gets involved in a swinging party. This story, like a lot of British sex comedies of the era (i.e."Confessions of a Window Cleaner, "Adventures of a Taxi Driver)really caters to the fantasies of the male British working class (which apparently involved getting grease all over the bare boobs and butts of the kind of glamorous women they could never have in real life).The third story is a kind of throwaway fantasy about a guy imagining he is an outlaw biker and chasing naked woman around. The fourth story is about a peeping tom getting his comeuppance.

The stories are narrated by Gabrielle Drake. Like many actresses in these films, Drake was probably too talented for the genre, but she sure had the body for it. Unfortunately, you don't get to see much of it here (try "Au Pair Girls" instead). Ditto with Jane Cardew (who plays the husband's secretary/lover in the first story) and, most regrettably, Claire Gordon (who plays the French actress). Gordon played the luscious college girl in "Konga" who Michael Gough's evil professor literally goes ape for; however, she has little more than a cameo here. Famed smut director Derek Ford does manage to shoehorn in a quite few, pretty graphic sex scenes in the version I saw, but they all involve anonymous--and not always very attractive--actresses, and these scenes were no doubt shot after-the-fact to spice up the film for more liberal markets, since they were a little too racy for Britian at that time. As the other review mentioned, the gorgeous Nicola Austine appears in the motorcycle story--as usual with no lines and no clothes. Austine was not really an actress, but she became somewhat famous just for being in so MANY scenes in so MANY movies like this.

Derek Ford was one of the most notorious sex directors in Britain because he often shot his own additional footage for the "foreign version" of his films, which eventually would involve hardcore scenes as the 70's wore on. (Even by non-British standards the foreign version of his film "Sex Express" aka "Diversions" is considered one of the most disturbing porn films of the 70's). This film though is mostly just a lot of nonsense, but it does have marginal entertainment value.

my favorite childhood movie

Growing up in Germany in the 70's and 80's, this movie was one of my favorites. Today it continues to be aired on several German TV channels every year, typically around Christmas, and it has an almost cult following among all my childhood friends and their families. I have never seen the English version, so I cannot comment on dialogue, but the dubbed into German version was enchanting. It is not your typical fairy tale adaptation by story, with a wonderful cast and musical score.

I couldn't stand more than 40 minutes of this

Jackie made a few early duds in his career, with movies that didn't deserve a talent of his caliber. From what I saw, it's a boring historical drama set in Japan during WWII. Jackie isn't the star in this movie, and he's merely a supporting player. He has a hideous looking army cut with short hair. You have to remember that this was very early in his career. I just wish Jackie had a lot more to do. The fights from what I saw looked very routine and unexciting. There was one dubbed line that made me cringe with how bad it was. "Shut up you b*****ch. Better wipe your ass clean!" when a woman stumbles into some water. I get this was done in the early 70's, but so many of these early martial art films are crude. I realize this isn't a very good review, but its god awful, and I couldn't finish it. I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan myself, so I'm not even sure if die hard Jackie fans can finish this

Noises (& Clothes) Off !

Released to French theaters mere months after BANANES MECANIQUES, which had been shot under makeshift conditions nearly a year earlier, PRENEZ LA QUEUE COMME TOUT LE MONDE (continuing the Continental penchant for "double entendre" titles, meaning both "Wait in Line…" or "Take Hold of the Tail Like Everyone Else" !) firmly established the formerly respectable Jean-François Davy's reputation as a smutty "farceur", if one whose dirty jokes could set the box office aflame. In retrospect incorporated as the mid-section of the director's so-called "trilogie paillarde", mixing tits 'n' titters, it abandons the sympathetic free-wheeling approach and "laissez faire" attitude of its predecessor for a more conventionally constructed narrative borrowed from the risqué bedroom farces that proved so popular on the French stage. For those unversed in the matter, this means multiple mistresses, cuckolded husbands, mistaken identities and lots of shouting and running about, only this time with added (and, thankfully, ample) skin. Needless to say, not everyone will consider the result the height of – even Gallic – humor, though the limitless energy and in certain cases downright shamelessness with which the cast quite literally attacks the material deserves to be commended. Almost as big a hit as BANANES, this film received a direct sequel in the far less commercially viable Q, with most of its main characters returning for a comically absurd vision of a socially and economically bankrupt near future. Unlike that third installment, all but completely bereft of turn on value because of its exaggerated presentation of sexual content, PRENEZ LA QUEUE still takes the time to linger on copious nudity supplied by some of the prettiest soft porn starlets of the early '70s.

Used car salesman Gilles (another likable turn from Davy's frequent leading man Philippe Gasté) clearly has a knack with the ladies, earning him the envy of his best friends, insurance attorney Xavier (Jean Roche, who starred in Max Pécas' FELICIA) and scrap yard owner Max (funny man Pierre Danny, who would tentatively dabble in hardcore with Pécas' LUXURE and Serge Korber's test case L'ESSAYEUSE, ordered for destruction by the French government in a hollow effort to halt pornography !) who would like nothing more than to trip him up with fiancée Françoise, a welcome return by Karine Jeantet who had starred in Davy's LA DEBAUCHE. Opportunities aren't exactly thin on the ground as Gilles juggles the dynamic duo of Juliette (Anne Libert), the first prize in a radio lottery (okay…), and Monique (Monique Vita), the errant bit on the side of a competitor. The film's frantic pace allows the always lively Libert plenty of opportunity to shine. The equally vivacious Vita was another popular simulated sex siren at the time, instrumental in pushing genre boundaries towards penetration in Korber's HARD LOVE and Alain Nauroy's haunting S&M melodrama LA VILLA a/k/a LE FEU AU VENTRE, the latter demonstrating her unique ability to open liquor bottles without use of her hands. Think about it…

Greatest surprise however is beautiful brunette Malisa Longo, whose questionable reputation rests almost entirely on Eurociné's cardboard Nazi numbers ELSA FRÄULEIN SS and HELGA, LA LOUVE DE STILBERG with her playing title role on both occasions. Cast as Christa, the incompetent new secretary who proves a savvy saleslady, she shows a poise and lightness of touch that eludes her screaming sisters who seem to think that the more noise they will make the funnier they will become. Plotwise, she's coveted by real estate vendor Claude (Christian Duroc from Michel Lemoine's LES PETITES SAINTES Y TOUCHENT) who conspires with the other men to have Gilles accosted by all of his oblivious amorous conquests at once by setting up a fake apartment rendezvous. Occasional laughs come courtesy of the theater veterans Davy has filled out his cast with, including the formidable Jean Droze – ineffectively trying to keep two very big dogs in line – who specialized in gay stereotypes in Q and several episodes of the long-running German LIEBESGRÜSSE AUS DER LEDERHOSE sex comedy series.

The financial means were dramatically increased in comparison to its cheaply made predecessor, allowing ace camera man Roger Fellous greater freedom to compose individual shots, but you may have to judicially freeze frames in order to fully appreciate his efforts which now tend to get lost in the tiresome shuffle. Sexually speaking, this is the most explicit entry of the three. As befits a pair of sex flick stalwarts, Libert and Vita contribute most actively though Longo offers quality over quantity in a particularly imaginative erotic encounter that has Gasté caressing her mouthwatering curves through a clear plastic chair. His evident expertise at exposing female epidermis makes it all the more regrettable that Davy fancies himself a "real" filmmaker, focusing too much attention away from the foxy flesh in favor of pratfalls and pathetic pranks that have trouble playing outside of his native France.

Men who eat sheep

Valtteri and Sepe are two city buddies who go into the woods to hunt and eat some sheep.Lampaansyöjät (1972) is directed by Seppo Huunonen.I read the 1970 novel by Veikko Huovinen a little before I saw this movie.Both are quite funny and a little tragicomic telling a tale of friendship between two Finns.Leo Lastumäki and Heikki Kinnunen as Valtteri and Sepe are excellent.Those two have paired many times, mostly doing TV comedy, and it's always a lot of fun to watch them together.Rose-Marie Precht plays Head Waitress.Jukka Sipilä is Farmer.Raili Veivo is Boarding House Hostess.The movie is quite hilarious from time to time.Like when those two are in a sinking boat.Or the German ladies who are offered some food called Rosvon paisti.It's quite grotesque and funny to watch when Sepe handles the dead sheep.This movie contains a lot of booze drinking, which is very Finnish.I don't drink myself, but it can be sometimes funny to watch that happening in a movie.I recommend both the book and the movie to be read and seen.

Entertaining shocker about vicious sisters terrorizing a guesthouse

This is a grisly, superbly amusing Gothic horror story with vivid performances from the mature ladies, they are admirably enigmatic and mysterious . It's a Spanish classic of the chilly grotesque with awesome duo, a convincingly gruesome twosome as spinsters, Aurora Bautista and Esperanza Roy as the weird house keepers. The sisters living together in a gloomy boarding house hire rooms to tourists and develop an awful habit only murder them. They portray fanatic aging sisters , when the demented Aurora learns of sexpot boarders she kill them. Meanwhile Judy Geeson takes a room in hopes of solving the mystery of disappearing her sister, Loreta Tovar as the murder victim at the start. Bautista plays her part to the hilt, unafraid of Eugenio Martin's unsympathetic camera and the viciousness of her character .

The picture packs atmospheric blending of eerie thrills and creepy chills combined with a terrific finale. It displays lots of guts and blood but it seems pretty mild compared to today's gore feasts. It's an unrelenting shock-feast laced with nice acting by the two Spanish stars that deserves its cult status. Watch for Aurora Bautista who makes an indelible mark on the movie as the deranged and religious keeper. Judy Geeson, too, is excellent as tourist investigating the strange events in the gloomy mansion. Lively secondary cast is frankly cool, formed by Spanish support casting, as Fernando Hilbeck, Vic Winner , Lone Fleming and Blanca Estrada , both taking early film roles. Bone-chilling musical score by Antonio Perez Olea. Passable photography with juicy atmosphere by Jose Aguayo, but unfortunately turns too much murky in some video print . The picture belongs to sub-genre about killings committed by aging spinsters women such as the classic ¨What ever happened to Baby Jane ? (1962) ¨by Robert Aldrich with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, ¨Huss, Huss, sweet Charlotte (1965)¨ by Aldrich with Bette Davis and Olivia De Havilland and ¨Whatever happened to aunt Alice ? (1969)¨by Lee H Katzin with Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon, among others.

The motion picture is professionally directed by Eugenio Martin or Gene Martin. He's a horror movies expert(Hypnosis, A candle for the devil, The fourth Mrs Anderson) and Spaghetti Western(Pancho Villa, Bounty hunter, Bad man's river). Rating : Acceptable horror movie, well worth watching. This macabre movie thriller that commits viewers to sit chewing their fingernails for more than ninety minutes will appeal to Euro-horror fans.

Wonderful Russian Weirdness!

I stumbled across this DVD at my local library so I took it home and watched it -- I'm glad I did! It appears to be a theatrical adaptation of a Russian fairytale -- goblins, witches, children disobeying their parents and learning a lesson from it, etc. It's very colorful and bizarre and though a little surreal/disjointed at times, it is competently made and would certainly delight children between ages 5-10 I'd say. Actually, it is very very similar to another Russian film -- "Morozko" (Jack Frost), which was featured on Mystery Science Theater. It's so familiar in fact that the witch character of Baba Yaga was played by the same actor in both films! And the witch lives in the same house -- a cabin that walks around with the aid of chicken legs! If you come across it and want to expose your kids to something culturally different that they won't get bored of or if you just are a fan of colorful, strange Russian cinema, definitely watch it!

Beautiful cinematography sums it up!

Very inspiring because the good guy wins! Crime doesn't pay! Everybody needs a hero and Tarzan comes through once again in the wilds of Alaska!!! Four stars seems a bit generous but we enjoyed the laughs and the cliffhanger, tension filled moments!!! What better entertainment can you find in Ukraine on a Saturday night? This is a MUST SEE if you love Louis Lamour novels!!! What can I say? The hero gave the little boy Jimmy good moral direction and valued human life. Men are men and women are women and boys will be boys when it comes to fighting. And THESE men don't share sleeping bags. But that is another story better left untold. The name of this movie is forgettable!
