The story concerns a mob family, headed by gambling czar Jose Ferrer. When one of family's hit men (Helmut Berger) fails to come up to expectations, Ferrer orders the man's execution.

The other review by zardoz gives a detailed plot summary. "Order to Assassinate" has some good talent working in it. Jose Ferrer and Kevin McCarthy do bring this film to life when they are on screen. The female lead's voice, whether hers or dubbed, brings the movie down. Helmut Berger more or less walks through his part stoically, and it doesn't generate sympathy. His part is not well-written. Unless he has some plan up his sleeve, there is no way he can escape from Jamaica; and he's never shown having a plan. So he more or less is manipulated by Ferrer. The only tensions are between him and Ferrer and him and the three cops Ferrer has recruited to assist him in his order to assassinate.

Sydne Rome comes in and out of the plot without much impact in either direction, to highlight Berger's quandary or to be cynical about it. The latter is the thrust. The story and script are weak, and so the result is bland. Berger doesn't have the acting chops to save it on the basis of his charisma alone. Ferrer almost does. He was the reason for watching.

Unless you are a euro-crime completist or like the euro-crime atmosphere, which this movie does possess, or like Ferrer and McCarthy, you can skip this one. A Berger fan might also go for this, but from where I sit, he doesn't project much of anything in this film. He seems more kittenish than masculine.
