Ultra bizarre fun times

Though Frankenstein's Castle Of Freaks could never be mistaken for quality cinema, it is a hugely enjoyable demented mess, with a near constant stream of entertaining incident. The acting, dubbing and writing are all pretty much nonsense, and the middling sound quality means that bits and pieces of dialogue aren't very audible. However, despite all technical issues, I found the film to be very worthwhile. The plot is awe inspiringly silly and seems to make little sense, basically just stringing together lots of loosely connected odd moments, and the characters fit in perfectly with this loose, strangeness firing on all cylinders style. Genz the deviant dwarf is a classic movie character and his antics are often hilarious. There aren't too many actual freaks, but Frankenstein's castle has a good number of weird servants speaking and acting in a weird way and the people who visit have an illogical tendency to instantly fall into each others arms with barely a word in amusing fashion. Sadly there's no gore, and the nudity is restricted to mostly lots of brief T&A flashes, but this lack is made up for by the fact that the plot was ever filmed at all and also Genz's sleazy and strange behaviour. He lights up the screen whenever he appears, as do both the films Neanderthals, who also get some entertaining fighting and general menacing, as well as some killing for one of them. The tone of the film swings wildly between serious, cheesy, comedic and often sleazy, but manages to mix it all up in a surprisingly natural seeming way. The sleaze is particularly endearing and makes it hard to believe that the film was once a PG in America. Altogether, this is a ridiculous, barely competent but immensely pleasurable viewing experience for the dedicated trash fan. All others will find it awful.
